C. Safety

1. Is it safe to visit the UAE?

Crime rates in the UAE are low, and you have very little to worry when it comes to personal safety. Political/civil unrest in the country is rare, yet safety precautions are recommended. It would be best to keep religious sensitivities in mind, as it is a Muslim country.

D. Local culture

1. What is the dress code of the UAE?

In Dubai, it is pretty liberal; most normal clothing is tolerated, provided it is modest and not too revealing. However, in other Emirates, it is advisable dress more modestly. It is best to cover the shoulders to below the knees.

2. Is the public display of affection allowed in the UAE?

There is a requirement for a modest code of behaviour. Holding hands and a peck on the cheek is fine. However, kissing, canoodling and fondling in public between couples (married or not) is considered indecent behaviour and can be an offence that could lead to police arrest.

3. Are there any restrictions on taking photos, especially of local/government establishments?

Avoid taking pictures of government buildings and military establishments. Photographing Muslim women is also considered offensive, yet this largely depends on the person. Ask permission, and if they refuse, don’t get offended.

4. Is alcohol and pork consumption allowed in the UAE?

Alcohol consumption in the UAE is permitted in only designated areas, such as licensed restaurants and bars in hotels. You are expected to behave decently under the influence of alcohol. You may get arrested if found drunk in public.

Muslims are not allowed to prepare, serve and eat pork. Non-Muslims can buy pork from select supermarkets in a separate area. Eating pork is permitted only inside private homes.
